Smoking adversely affects the normal mucus flow and natural defenses of the sinuses. Smoking can contribute to recurrent sinus infections and chronic inflammation and infection. Adequate management of allergies with medication taken as prescribed is helpful. Use of a nasal saline rinse to promote proper nasal mucus flow and flush out infected material is also helpful. Avoid use of over-the-counter nasal decongestant sprays is also suggested.
